Princecraft is a Canadian manufacturer, built in Princeville, Quebec, and has been designing aluminum boats specifically for Canadian freshwater conditions since the 1960s. That regional focus shows up in the lineup: models built around the kind of rocky-shoreline, variable-depth lakes that make up most of Northern Ontario rather than a generic all-conditions hull. Starcraft is a longer-established American boat builder with a wide product range covering aluminum and pontoon boats for a broader, more general market.

Hull Construction

Princecraft’s aluminum hulls are welded rather than riveted, which matters over the life of the boat: a welded hull doesn’t have seams that can loosen or work over years of use the way a riveted hull can. Starcraft also builds welded aluminum construction at its higher tiers, so this isn’t a clean brand-level differentiator, it depends on which specific model and tier you’re comparing. Ask about construction method on the exact model you’re looking at rather than assuming based on brand alone.

Model Range for Northern Ontario Conditions

Princecraft’s lineup includes the Yukon series, deep-V hulls in the 17 to 19 foot range with aerated livewells and trolling motor mounts built in, and the Sport series, a smaller footprint better suited to tighter Shield lakes. That range covers most of what buyers up here are actually looking for: a boat that handles chop on a bigger lake and one that fits a smaller, rockier launch. Starcraft’s range is broader but less specifically built around Canadian Shield lake conditions, since the brand serves a wider geographic market.

For Starcraft, that depends on finding an authorized Starcraft dealer, which may or may not be convenient depending on where you are in Northern Ontario. That’s a real practical difference for anyone up here, not a knock on Starcraft’s build quality.

Resale Value

Both brands hold value reasonably well on the used market up here, and neither has a clear resale edge that would settle the decision on its own. What actually moves resale more than brand is documented maintenance history and whether the boat was stored and winterized properly every year, regardless of which name is on the hull.

If you want a hull genuinely designed around Canadian Shield lake conditions and local parts and warranty service that don’t require a long drive, Princecraft is the stronger practical fit, which is why we carry it.
